Trunyan Village

Trunyan Village is situated on the Batur volca-nic crater right opposite Batur Lake. This vil-lage can only be accessed by boat across Lake Batur. The journey takes 15 to 30 minutes. In this village lives Balinese Aga, that is, the native tribe who had lived in Bali before Hinduism came. In Trunyan dead people are not buried or cremated but placed in cages made of bamboo and laid on the ground under Taru Menyan trees until they rot.Strangely, however, the dead bodies don’t stink. The Taru Menyan trees are believed to have neutralized and absorbed the bad smell so that people don’t smell it. The name of the village is derived from the name of the tree (Taru Menyan).
