Mount Agung

Mount Agung

Mount Agung is deemed holy in Bali as it is believed to be the replica of Mount Meru (Hinduism

teaching), the centre of the universe. Mount Agung is a tourist attraction for climbers who wish to get pleasure from the stunning scenery along the way and views from the top of the moun-tain. Guides are availble in Besakih. There are two routes you can follow:

One is from Pasar Agung Temple (Pura Pasar Agung). This route is very popular among tourists because it only takes 3 – 4 hours to get to the top. To reach the top and see the sunrise climbing usually starts at 02.30. Thir route, however, ends at about 100 meters below the peak of the mountain.

Two is from Pura Besakih (Besakih Temple). This route ends right at the top of the mountain and takes about 7 hours to get to the top. To reach the peak and see the sunrise in the morning climbing should start at 23.00.

Mount Agung is a relatively safe hike without a need for special equipment such as ropes. What you need is warm clothes and plenty of water.
